Livewire Recharged 3 & King of BUSHIDO 8 results, 01/05/19, Augusta, Ga.
In the first match, Scott Mayson, the “Habersham Hero” himself, fought South Carolina native Kid Riot. The two worked the crowd as well as each other, getting the audience involved as they exchanged wrestling holds. Mayson kept sarcastically asking the referee “Is this okay?” every time he locked Riot into a hold, only to shout “This is not okay,” when Riot turned the tables on him. Riot went on to win the match, the crowd cheering the babyface as he raised his hands in victory.
The second match of the show featured two wrestlers who weren’t on the original card; Zuka King and Chris Valo. The E.N.D. member King defeated Valo.
“The Highlight of the Night” Jeremy Cruz defeated James Boulevard in the third match of the night.
The next match saw tag-team action as Bastion Savage and Cali Cannon came out to a chorus of boos, their Canadian flag waving proudly. Chants of “USA! USA!” began in the crowd, which turned into cheers as Dementia 13 came out. Kevin Kurgan and Darkness, both from the Midland Valley, were clearly crowd favorites as they prowled the outside of the ring. Savage and Cannon controlled much of the match, targeting Darkness and keeping him isolated from his tag partner, but finally Kurgan got the hot tag and exploded into the match, pinning Savage for the win.
Next, Thomson’s own Charlie Anarchy defended the SGWA Championship against Augusta-native “The Wrestling Saint” Hunter Young. Young was clearly hungry for the title shot, but the veteran Anarchy made him pay with a spin out suplex off the ropes, then finished him with the Anarchy Driver** to retain the title.
The main event of Recharged 3 pitted “The Boozerweight” Matt Sells against Danny Only. Despite sharing a brew before the bell rang, the two soon exchanged blows like a blown-out bar fight. Towards the end of the match, Only managed to sneak in a devious thumb to the eye of Sells, leaving his opponent partially blind and confused. Sells went on to grab the referee instead of Only, trapping him in a quick roll-up pin. Only’s hand dropped to hit the mat three times, leaving Sells thinking that he had won the match. When the referee finally explained to Sells that it was all a mistake, the bleary-eyed blonde was quickly caught up by his sly opponent and pinned for the three count.
Before the second event of the night began, a brief “Proving Ground” match took place, with North Carolinian Leo Pryde taking on “The Party Starter” Keith “The Mac”. The Mac clearly had the crowd behind him, showing off his dance moves as he entered the ring. Eventually, The Mac pinned Pryde and got the three count.
Then it was onto the King of BUSHIDO 8, as the first match of the first bracket saw Cauliflower Brown face off against “The Unknown Prodigy” Lucky Ali. The crowd seemed to favor both men, with cheers for both alternating throughout the fight. The young up-and-comer Ali finally got the best of the veteran Brown, earning the pinfall victory and moving on to the second bracket.
The next match of the first bracket saw the only female competitor in King of BUSHIDO, “The Sexy Young Cannibal” Savannah Evans. Evans is making quite the name for herself in independent wrestling, and tonight the crowd saw why as she not only took on current PCW Soda City champ “The Project” Kevin Ray, but at times had to fend off the accompanying Mallaki Matthews. As Ray distracted and argued with the referee, Matthews choked Evans at the corner ring post, or stomped on her outside the ring at times during the match. Despite all of this, Evans pinned the Soda City champ and booked her trip to the second round. After the bell, Matthews and Ray tried to double team Evans, but Lucky Ali charged from the back, chair in hand, to help fend them off. Evans shrugged off his offered help, ostensibly because the two of them face off in the second bracket.
Next, “The Michigan Muscle” Cody Vance faced off against the founder of Top Tier Nutrition, Drew Adler. The two athletic big men traded blows and holds toe-to-toe, but Adler finally pulled out the victory, earning his spot in the second bracket.
The final first bracket match saw “The Southern Savior” John Styler not only take on Augusta native Sean Legacy, but Skyler also defended his PWI Ultra J Championship. The acrobatic Legacy seemed on the verge of defeating Skyler, at one point locking the champ into an armbar and asking the audience “Do you want me to break it?” referencing Skyler’s arm. Skyler managed to escape the hold, however, and went on to defeat the crowd favorite Legacy, moving on to the second bracket.
A brief intermission was held to let the wrestlers get a second wind before heading into the second bracket set of fights. Hip-Hop artist Gorganus entered the ring to entertain the crowd, moving kids to dance to his beats and moving the crowd with his positive vibe.
The first match of the second bracket was indeed Lucky Ali versus Savannah Evans. Ali seemed reluctant to engage Evans, not because of her gender, but because he knew she’d sustained an injury in her earlier bout against Kevin Ray. Evans, however, would not back down. She roared and attacked Ali, and some of her punches swing wild, leading the referee to stop and ask her if she was alright to continue. She insisted that she was, but Ali never quite seemed convinced. Finally, the bout gets fully underway, with Ali eventually scoring the pinfall victory. In a show of good sportsmanship, he helps Evans to her feet, acknowledging her efforts.
Then the heel who clearly revels in being vilified, John Skyler returns to the ring, this time versus Drew Adler. Early into the match, Adler appeared to suffer a wrenching knee injury, and Skyler backed off to allow the referee and announcer Bob Keller to check on Adler. Eventually the two men help Adler to his feet, with more referees pouring in from the back to help Adler get out of the ring, and it appeared that he was going to have to forfeit the match.
As soon as Adler is positioned to be helped down from the ring, Skyler launched himself across it, aiming a vicious dropkick to the injured knee. Adler, clearly in agony, writhed on the canvas while Skyler threw his arms wide in the Gladiator “Are you not entertained” pose while the crowd rained boos upon him.
Skyler continued to wrench and stomp the injured knee, at one point even exiting the ring to snatch up the ring bell, intent on doing further damage, but the referee managed to grab the object from his hand. Adler tried to fight back, throwing wild slaps and swings at his opponent, as the crowd tried to rally the babyface. After several close exchanges, Adler managed to land a surprise running powerslam on the heel, getting a two count. Adler then locked in a submission move, while the crowd chanted “Tap! Tap!” to Skyler. After breaking the hold, Skyler rolled to the outside of the ring, where he grabbed the Top Tier Nutrition founder’s sports bottle, taking a swig. Adler moved to stare his opponent down before reaching to grab him to pull him into the ring, and Skyler spat the water directly into Adler’s eyes. He rushed into the ring for a quick roll up cover and pinned the injured Adler, one, two, three, for the victory.
Then, to allow Skyler and Ali both time to recuperate some for the final match of the tournament, two non-bracket matches took place. The first, a tag-team bout between Charlie Anarchy and his partner Eric Darkstorm against Matt Sells and his partner, “The Nefarious One” Karl Hagar. This bout brought some lighter, comedic moments, which was a nice change of pace from the brutal, intense match just prior.
Anarchy and Darkstorm challenged their opponents to shots. “The Boozerweight” Matt Sells wasn’t about to turn that down. After two sets were exchanged, Sells and Hagar were about to down their next shots when Anarchy and Darkstorm super kicked them both into the ring ropes, and the match was on. The cowardly heels, Sells and Hagar, managed to isolate Darkstorm for a good bit of the match, one working him over behind the referee’s back while the other caused a distraction. Finally Darkstorm got the hot tag and Anarchy exploded into the match, matching short work of both men and getting the pinfall victory.
The next match was a bitter grudge match between previous King of BUSHIDO tournament winners; BSHP King, winner of BUSHIDO 3 versus Suge D, who won BUSHIDO 6. Despite the grueling pace of the match, there were moments of comedy as well, such as when Suge D posed laconically in the center of the ring, taunting King, and when King started calling Suge “Carl” because he “… ain’t calling another man ‘sugar’”.
Eventually the fight takes its toll on both men, as after a head butt from Suge, both men go down, and neither could get fully to his feet by a 10 count. The referee declares it a draw, and the crowd starts chanting “Let them fight…” They got up and continued to brawl, even as the referee kept shouting “The match is over.” The two bitter rivals continue to scrap and grapple back towards the curtain, disappearing into the locker room.
The final match of the night saw Lucky Ali take on John Skyler. Ali is announced first, but as he made his way to the ring, Skyler burst through curtain and attacked him from behind. The bell rang, and the match was on. Skyler continued to brutalize and bully Ali, stomping him on the floor outside the ring and yelling at him to stay down.
“You don’t belong here, stay outta my ring,” barked Skyler, as the referee starting to count to ten. As he reached 9, Ali managed to get up and roll back into the ring. The heel continued to throw insults as well as punches against his opponent. Ali finally started to get some offense in of his own, and the two traded blows and near-falls, before Ali crushed Skyler into the corner with running strikes twice, then a strong running kick on the third attack. Skyler regained the upper hand after a quick 2 count, and continued to taunt his young challenger, getting into his face while Ali threw hands, but missed. A sudden kick by Ali sends Skyler hurtling outside the ring. The heel recovered, going for a pin again, but Ali raised his shoulder by the count of 2, struggling to his feet. Skyler charged like an angry bull, but Ali evaded him, catching Skyler in a pin and one, two, three, the referee’s hand hit the mat three times. Lucky Ali is the winner of the King of BUSHIDO 8 tournament. Ali, in surprised disbelief, was presented with the white katana as streamers flew around him. The babyfaces poured out from the locker room; Suge D, Savannah Evans and Cauliflower Brown, and they climbed into the ring to raise Ali’s hand and help him celebrate his victory.
